WVMEP NAVIGATES UNFAMILIAR WATERS FOR SMOKED FISH PRODUCTS PRODUCER
Challenge:
NYCY-Keta Couronne, a newly-established Charles Town producer of smoked fish products using several varieties of West Virginia-raised fish, needed technical assistance with selecting production equipment to cure and package fish for shipment to customers throughout the eastern United States.
Solution:
WVMEP met with representatives from NYCY, and from the Natural Capital Investment Fund, a Shepherdstown organization that provides business and technical assistance to companies manufacturing products from West Virginia's natural resources.
WVMEP then used its engineering expertise to develop data and design equipment for NYCY's smoke supply and production control systems.
Benefits:
- Hiring of eight employees
- Investment of $75,000 in capital equipment for custom-designed smoker, approximately one-half the cost of an off-the-shelf model
- Projected sales of almost $1.1 million in the first year of operation, based on orders from distributors and restaurants
