MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

Plant Layout

One of the largest contributors to production cost is materials management. Typically materials management issues are among the top two or three items increasing “non-value added” time and cost.

How efficiently you handle raw materials and work-in-process (WIP) can have a significant impact on productivity and profit margins.

A Materials Management Assessment conducted by WVMEP consultants can identify problems within the system and opportunities for improvement that will make the overall production operation more efficient and more productive.

The WVMEP Program

The WVMEP program begins with a walkthrough of the plant and interviews with key personnel who deal with materials in the plant. This initial gathering of data is followed by:

  • Analysis of current handling, storage and movement of raw materials, finished goods and WIP
  • Study of material handling techniques and equipment
  • Analysis of material ordering and tracking procedures
  • Production scheduling review
  • In plant traffic patterns and schedules

All of this data will be compiled into a report identifying problems and opportunities for improvement and recommended changes that may include storage and movement of equipment, work-flow modifications, process modifications, changes to documentation and procedures, changes in job descriptions and duties, and changes to plant layout.
