Creating Clean, Safe & Organized Workplaces

What is the 5-S System?
The 5-S System is a series of activities designed to improve workplace organization and standardization. These activities, all of which begin with S, include:

  • Sort through all items and remove unneeded items
  • Set in Order remaining items, set limits, create temporary location indicators
  • Shine or clean everything and use cleaning as inspection
  • Standardize the first 3 S's by implementing visual displays and controls
  • Sustain the gains through self-discipline, training, communications, and total employee involvement

One Day 5S Training and Implementation
The WVMEP 5S program begins with a brief 1 - 2 hour classroom instruction in the principles of lean and 5S. This explains what the 5S's are, how they are used, documents used to implement the program, and the position of 5S in an overall lean implementation.

Following this, the team begins a 5S event in a pre-selected area of the plant focusing on the first two S's, sort and set in order.

  • The area is photographed and drawn if needed to document the "before condition".
  • The Sorting walkthrough is conducted, developing the "red tag list".

  • These two steps are then combined in a 30-day action list used to begin the effort and provide direction for the team. Many companies choose to stop the initial training at this point, or the day can continue, time permitting.
  • The Set in Order walkthrough is then conducted (can be concurrent with sort) to develop ideas for organizing and changing the layout of the area.
  • The Standardize or daily cleaning and inspection list is developed.
  • The Sustain or 5S committee inspection procedures are discussed and modified as needed for the specific company site.

The WVMEP can also provide continuous support through a 5S retainer contract. This will cover additional training sessions and on site implementation support including meetings and team work days if desired.
